TMS Therapy & Compass Health Systems
In partnership with HPR Treatment Centers, Compass Health Systems now provides transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to our patients that struggle with treatment-resistant depression, OCD, PTSD, and/or anxiety. Read below to learn more about TMS and discover the benefits of TMS therapy.
What Is TMS Therapy?
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is an in-office, FDA-approved depression and OCD treatment that takes between 18 and 19 minutes per session. It's non-invasive and drug-free and is performed while you sit comfortably. A full course of TMS treatments includes 5 sessions a week for up 6 weeks, then a 3-week period of less frequent sessions.
How TMS Therapy Works
Mood is regulated by a region of the brain called the prefrontal cortex. In some people, the cells in this part of the brain become less active. This can be triggered by a traumatic event, or by physical changes that alter brain chemistry. Reduced activity makes it harder for your brain to regulate your mood and mental health. This can lead to major depressive disorder. TMS therapy works by stimulating the cells in your left prefrontal cortex with electromagnetic pulses delivered by an electromagnetic coil. When prefrontal cortex cells are treated in this way, their activity levels return to normal. The cells become more effective at regulating your mood. This reduces or eliminates your symptoms of depression. TMS therapy can also help people with OCD, PTSD, and anxiety, where the treatment is similar to TMS for depression, helping to regulate the activity of brain cells.
Before TMS Treatment
You sit comfortably in a treatment chair. No sedation or anesthesia is needed.
During TMS Treatment
- An HPR Treatment Centers technician gently places the magnetic treatment coil lightly on your head.
- The coil delivers focused magnetic stimulation directly to the target areas of the brain.
- You sit comfortable, awake, and alert for the length of the treatment session-about 18 to 19 minutes.
After TMS Treatment
You safely resume normal activity, like driving, exercising, and working, right away. There are no after-effects, and no downtime is needed.
Safe & FDA-Approved
TMS therapy with BrainsWay® devices is approved by the FDA for people who have tried antidepressants for depression treatment without the desired results. And as of 2018, BrainsWay® devices have been FDA-approved for the treatment of OCD. To date, more than 2,150,000 treatments have been administered to more than 65,000 patients.
TMS therapy provides long-term results for people suffering from depression. It is backed by multiple clinical trials that show it’s a safe and effective treatment and can also be helpful for OCD, PTSD, and anxiety. In an open-label study, 68% of the participants who were followed for one year after therapy for depression maintained the benefits of TMS. Although this is a long-term treatment, the effects of TMS on your depression may not be permanent. Some people need booster treatments to stay depression-free. Most people who need booster treatments for depression usually need only one per year.
TMS therapy is a non-invasive treatment that doesn’t involve any medication.
- No antidepressants
- No sedation
- No anesthesia
You can continue to take your antidepressant medication during treatment, if you wish. Taking medication won’t have negative effects on the outcome of your TMS treatment.
Low-Stress Outpatient Treatment
TMS is an outpatient treatment, so you won’t have to stay long when you have a session. A typical TMS session takes only 18 to 19 minutes, so you can complete it very quickly, and get on with your day! TMS is low-stress. We’ll welcome you to our office and direct you to one of our comfortable treatment chairs, where you’ll relax while wearing the electromagnetic coil. For most people, the only thing that’s noticeable about the treatment is a slight clicking sound. You can even listen to music or play on your phone while you have the treatment! These factors make TMS therapy much easier—and more pleasant—than other drug-free treatments.
Free from the Side Effects of Medication
Antidepressant medications can cause unpleasant side effects. Because TMS therapy doesn’t involve medication, you won’t have to worry about experiencing any of these problems. Fewer than 5% of TMS patients stop treatment because of adverse effects. The most common side effect is discomfort at the treatment site, during treatment. People who have this side effect usually find it subsides after the first week of treatment.
